Why do we eat these snacks when we are already unhappy with our weight?

It's almost like there's a little demon inside of me making me eat the cakes, chocolate, crisps or cheese. She sits inside me out of sight and just piles the pressure on. I don't have to go to the shops, but I can't resist the pressure. Of course, once I'm in the shop, it's too easy for the demon to make me grab the problem food. Weight loss swings and roundaboutsYou have probably dieted successfully before. So you know you have the 'strength of will' to lose the weight. So how come you have put the weight back on? The answer is that it's not a question of 'strength of will' at all. The answer is that you lost the weight because you had a compelling reason to do it. And in the mind, a compelling reason 'beats' a demon, as long as the compelling reason is there... If you don't get rid of the demon, she's just going to bide her time, and sooner or later you have the problem again. Facing the demonThe only way to make weight loss permanent, is to face your demon. As soon as you start to do that, you make a startling discovery - the 'demon' has actually had your best interests at heart all the time! It's not that she's perverse, it's just that she has her own ideas about what your best interests actually are. And those ideas can be a bit bizarre and irrational! The Subconscious MindWe like to think that our mind is logical and sensible. Fat chance! Actually, the bulk of our mind is taken up with subconscious processes, and the subconscious mind works very differently from the conscious mind. Riding a bikeLearning how to ride a bike is an example of the subconscious mind in process. You can't read a set of instructions, get on a bike for the first time, and ride it perfectly - it just doesn't work like that. It's an example of learning by doing, or subconscious process. You don't know how you ride a bike in the sense of being able to write a set of instructions, you just know that you can. Once you've learnt, you can't forget. You might not ride a bike for another 20 years, but you could jump back in the saddle and ride it straight away, albeit a little wobbly! The subconscious and conscious minds work very differently. Subconscious decisionsJetWhen I was young, I had a dog - a collie named Jet. When he was a puppy, a golden labrador attacked him out of the blue. As a grown dog, Jet always had a problem with golden labradors. He might have been enthusiastically chasing after a stick, but if he became aware of a golden labrador, he immediately had to break off whatever he was doing and investigate the other dog. He would always try (and usually succeed) to dominate the labrador. Jet's decisionI don't believe that Jet had a conscious mind. However, it was clear to me that, when he was attacked, Jet made a decision something like, "Golden labradors are not safe". Young children make subconscious decisions too. Permanent Weight LossFood was scarce when I was growing up. I guess that lead me to make a subconscious decision something like, "If there is food available, eat it because there might not be any next time you're hungry". The only way I was able to make permanent weight loss was to become aware of this decision and, eventually, make a new decision.
